That Wil Cordero Trade...

If we had never made the Wil Cordero Trade, would Enrique Wilson have been an adequate replacement at either SS or 2nd base?

Last off-season, instead of signing Omar to a two year 15 million dollar extension (to begin after his remaining two year 3-3.5 million per year contract expired after 2002) we could have traded Omar, who was a steal at 3 million a year...(of course, Omar could then have demanded out after one year with his new team)

With Enrique at S.S., no need to trade Robbie now.

Subtract Rickey G's average contract of 3.5 million a year, Wil Cordero's average contract of 3.5 million a year, Omar's reworked contract that averages out to 5 million a year, Lawtons contract of 7 million a year...

That's a 19 million dollar a year savings....

or the exact equivalent to what Robbie and Juan made last year. (18 million, plus 2 million deferred)

So, our line-up this year would have been Fryman/Branyan at third, Enrique at short, Robbie at second, Thome at first, Einar Catching, Juan in right Field, Bradley-Cabrera-Anderson in Center, Branyan-Cabrera-Garcia in left-field. For the same payroll that we currently have.

The mix of veterans to younger players is enticing...Shortstop, Left-field and Centerfield and Catcher (perhaps even some third base) have young players, mixed in with potential Hall of Fame Vets at the other position...

And a full house every night to prevent further payroll cuts.

yeah, right.. the average fan working with perfect 20-20 hindsight. There was no reason to expect that Cordero would tank last year. He was a solid .280 hitter for 9 seasons, and he was only 28 when we got him back.

I hated the trade from the moment it happened. (I have saved the rant) We had just traded David Justice saving ourselves 17 million dollars, then picked up Wil Cordero who had over 7 million still due on his contract.

To be fair to Shapiro, Hart made the Wil Cordero trade.

Hart made one too many trade that summer, the Wickman trade has turned out Ok, but the Wil Cordero for ARAM and Wilson trade was bad for for losing Wilson and for the 7 million we took on.

Ya know - if Wilson was such a damn good player howcome he couldn't start with the Pirates? Sometimes the idiocy on this forum amazes me. Wilson could not break in with the Pirates - a team where a player who could breath could start.

Wilson was hitting .320 when traded, and doing things not often seen on a baseball field, like hustling. He was happy here and played a valuable role. He was not happy in P'burg, and hasn't played much for the Yanks.

He may have been hitting .320 in parttime duty with the Indians - had a chance at fulltime duty with the Pirates and failed to produce. Tells me all I need to know about Enrique Wilson. But then again I am no baseball genius....

Oh and letsee - Alomar played thru injuries instead of letting Enrique play for him? Hehehe. Most people like it when a player plays thru injuries.

And the Pirates were impatient with Wilson? Ok fine. Believe what you want.

Truth is Enrique Wilson is an utility infielder/role player. He had a chance to show otherwise. Did not.

Thome had five weeks to correct himself last season, but Enrique Wilson, just traded to a new league, must deliver right away, and on a team that was weak offensively....hmmmmm.

Uh yeah. Thome has a little bit more of a track record than Wilson, dontcha think?

Besides Alex - Wilson had a year to a year and a half to show SOMETHNG to make him worth keeping. Would hardly call that needing to produce right away.
